Bobby Fisher: an Orient Pioneer

To mark the start of Black History Month we've dug into our archives to bring you an interview from August 1997 with Bobby Fisher: Orient's first Black player, first Black captain, and stalwart of our 70s golden era. This interview was a joint effort by our founder Dave Knight, and the Editor of the time, Jamie Stripe.

One of the best things about being involved with a fanzine is that sometimes you get to talk to former players and get a small insight into the professional game. After a fair bit of phoning around I managed to track down none other than Bobby Fisher, former O’s full back and part of the 1978 FA Cup semi-final team. We arranged to meet in the Bakers Arms one night back in August and despite Bobby’s fears that the interview was some kind of wind-up the evening proved a success.

Early Days

We kicked off by asking how Bobby got involved with Orient. Originally QPR had wanted to sign him, but his uncle, former Os winger Mark Lazarus, persuaded him to go down to Orient for a trial as the chances of ‘Fish’ breaking into the first team were higher.   Our main man soon found himself in the Os youth team and a very useful one it was.  Glenn Roeder, Tony Grealish and of course the great Laurie Cunningham were all regulars. According to Bobby that youth side was up with the Arsenal and Spurs sides at the time and it was nice to see four or five of that squad graduate through the ranks to the first team.
