Orient Chester League Cup 1962 programme

Blast from the past: 64 years since Leyton Orient notched its biggest win

Orient's lone season in the first division didn't gift us a ton of highlights, but one match worth revisiting is the 9-2 win over Chester in the League Cup, which tied a club record for most goals. Mark Rollinson digs through the archives to review the game, which happened on his birthday.

This Saturday, 17th October represents a significant anniversary for the Os. Sixty-four years ago (on a foggy Wednesday evening in 1962) Orient equalled their record for most goals in a game, registering a 9-2 win at home to Chester in a third-round League Cup tie. It was also the day that I was born (so I’ll forgive my Dad for not being there to provide a first-hand account!)

As I’m sure most Os supporters will know, 1962-63 was our only season (so far!) in the top flight of English football. Against the odds, the Os had made a reasonable start to the season, and by the end of September had won four of their first 11 games, including famous home wins against (eventual champions) Everton, Manchester United and West Ham United.
