Drinkers For The Booze Ban

I love a pint, me, when I go to a game. Win, lose or draw you cannot whack the hit of that first post-match sup of fine ale or stout in the warmth of the Supporters Club as you reflect on what you’ve just enjoyed/endured. During bad runs of Orient form I am, literally, only here for the beer. A few drinks and football are natural companions. So the suggestion by our PM, Andy Burnham, that the ban on bringing drink into the stands should be lifted is a welcome development, right? No, it’s a terrible idea.
Burnham is the most genuine football fan ever to occupy No 10. The likes of Tony Blair and David Cameron were very obviously, cringingly, faking their devotion to what their comms advisers would have told them to call “the beautiful game”. Burnham, on the other hand, gets it. His past involvement in Supporters Direct and the emerging fans’ trust movement, the Hillsborough campaign, the fact he wrote articles for When Saturday Comes in the 90s, all suggest that he deeply understands football. And he gets it the way we get it.
