Richie Wellens: The case for and against

A slow start to the season has mounted pressure on the Leyton Orient manager, but maybe the draw against Bradford and a humble post-match interview marked a turning point. Still, is it too early to sack him, or have we seen enough?

Did Richie Wellens’ post-match interview with Dave Victor after earning a draw at Bradford signal the emergence of a new Richie Wellens?

After weeks of being seen but not heard, the Leyton Orient manager took a decidedly contrite tone in accepting blame for overcomplicating his instructions in training, leading to the poor run of results.

It was a sharp contrast from the defiant and peeved manner in which he had spoken during Orient’s struggles before he went off media for about a month.

"I take full accountability. We got a new group of players at the start of the season and I wanted to be top straight away – on the ball, patterns, rotate, all of this – and I forgot to do the foundations,” he told Victor. “The team has worked hard. Sometimes it's tried too hard. But I take accountability because I want to get to us being a top football team, but I've dodged doing the basics and the defensive stuff."
