Well, here we go again. After last Saturday’s warm up against Oxford United in the Carabao Cup, the real football begins tomorrow, at home to League One newbies Sheffield Wednesday.
Ordinarily it would be one of those encounters where we hope to give the Big Club a bloody nose, but likely rue the visit of such a mighty footballing beast so early in the season. But the Owls’ recent history means there is a bit more nuance to this one.
Our opponents: back from the brink
What we have is an intriguing opening fixture against a club emerging from ten toxic years of ex-owner Dejthong Chansiri bringing every single aspect of Sheffield Wednesday FC to its knees. Add to that last season’s punitive sanctions from the EFL in the form of a -18 points deduction, and a terrible time on the pitch which led them to finish with zero points and a -60 goal difference.
