Reality bit painfully for the Os today, as growing optimism fuelled by a long summer of sun and a promising pre-season came into direct contact with the biggest club in the division.
There was no gentle August introduction to the season this year, as a packed away end and fairly full home stands were primed and ready well ahead of 3pm for the two clubs' first encounter since 2012. The visitors' excitement was palpable, with their fans noisy, good-natured, and raucous, doubtless encouraged by Orient manager Richie Wellens flattering them so extensively in his pre-match interview. Lovely though Orient's new tracksuit jackets are, it did seem a little cruel to have the players jogging around in them for 90 seconds under the punishing sun.
