Orient's long-serving managers: comparisons and memories

With Richie Wellens recent managerial performance very much under the spotlight, Mark Rollinson compares the records and fates of five of Orient's longer-serving managers to see if there is any learning to be had about when to pull the trigger on a long-term managerial career.

I was at Burton on Saturday and shortly after Burton’s late winner went in, a “Wellens Out” chant was heard. Based on numbers shouting it was a minority view, but nevertheless this was the first public and audible expression of the undercurrent of discontent which has been a feature of this season and much of last.

Herman Wang admirably summarised the pros and cons of persisting with Wellens in his Orientear piece just before the Blackpool game. For what it’s worth, my view is that we should stick with Richie, but this is becoming an increasingly contestable view. Faced with yet another rebuild, it seems clear that Wellens is still searching for his best combination.
