Wigan is a short 30-minute hop on the train for me and Avanti West Coast delivered a smooth ride. I met a Millwall fan on the train travelling home from working in Glasgow, and who was following their early kick off against Norwich on his phone.
We had a convivial conversation in which he accepted in full my thesis that we gave it out large to them both on and off the pitch in our memorable 5-2 mid-week victory at their gaff in February 2007. He informed me that ‘wall fans look fondly upon the O’s, and we indulged in some mutual Shammers hate [Ed: lovely bit of foreshadowing] before I disembarked at Wigan North Western.
